The first meeting of the International Advisory Board of the ZJU-UIUC Institute (ZJUI) was held at the Haining International Campus of Zhejiang University. The International Advisory Board plays the role of “Think Tank” for high-level management of education policies for the Zhejiang University / University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign Institute. The members include Dr. Yang Wei; Dr. Venky Narayanamurti; Dr. Thomas Magnanti; Dr. Dim-Lee Kwong; and Dr. Wei Shyy. The board’s full bios are available on our website. These leading figures and experts from world-class universities and research institutes provided strategic advice and direction for the high level of university management and the research and development of the Joint Institute to promote the internationalization of the institute.
At this meeting of the International Advisory Board, ZJUI Dean Li Erping welcomed the members to Haining, then Prof. He Lianzhen, Dean of the International Campus introduced the development process and future development direction of Zhejiang University International Campus. Dean Li gave an introduction of the development and history of ZJUI as well as ZJUI’s strategies and ideas for teaching and scientific research. Prof. Philip Krein, Executive Dean of ZJUI, introduced the college's four professional teaching majors, defined the whole-person education model, and discussed the cross curriculum teaching model benefits.
At the meeting, the experts of the International Advisory Board heard the reports of international campus and ZJUI and acknowledged the progress made in the construction and development of the international campus and the achievements made by ZJUI. They pointed out that ZJUI must adhere to its high-level of school-management policies and actively absorb and take advantage of learning from its cooperative partners. Assistant President of ZJU, Secretary of Party Working Committee and Vice Dean of International Campus, ZJU, Fu Qiang; Vice Dean of International Campus, ZJU, Prof. K.C. Ting; and Vice Dean of ZJUI Prof. Ma Hao also attended the meeting.
The ZJUI International Advisory Board was established in May this year. It is an important part of the internal management system of the institute. Members will regularly hold meetings to discuss major issues related to the missions and educational purposes of the joint institute, and to upgrade the international education level and optimize the training program, promote the development of scientific research, and provide suggestions for the transformation and application of research results.
On the morning of June 7th, the "Globalization of Engineering Education" and "University Double-first-class Project" master lectures were held at the international campus. Dr. Yang Wei, Dr. Venky Narayanamurti, and Dr. Thomas Magnanti gave lectures on the subject of “University double-first-class project ,” “Engineering Education, Globalization and the Research University of the 21st Century”, and “Educating Technology-Grounded Leaders for Design-Driven Innovation”. Leaders of relevant colleges and departments of Zhejiang University, the representatives of the international campus, and a group of teachers and students from the international campus attended the lecture.
ZJUI introduced UIUC's top professional training system and teaching resources, combined with the advantages of Zhejiang University’s corresponding departments.
ZJUI established a newer model of international cooperation in higher education, brought together global elites, and collaborated on cross-innovation research to cultivate young leaders.
