    The Environmental Laboratory (132 m2) is fully equipped with a full range of instruments. The laboratory emphasizes the combination of systematic training of basic experimental skills and the cultivation of scientific research ability, and strives to build a set of environment-related experimental projects according to the comprehensive ability of the students, together with the corresponding knowledge-based professional experimental courses.

    Features

    The Environmental Laboratory supports routine environmental analyses (such as pH, hardness, conductivity, alkalinity, bacteriological analyses, etc.) and analyses of environmental samples in three main areas of research: organic pollutants, inorganic pollutants, and environmental microbiology.

  • Quantum Physics Laboratory

    The Quantum Physics Laboratory is mainly used for experiments related to university physics: quantum physics. The laboratory is 105 m2  in total, and can accommodate 10 groups of students, with a maximum of 30 people at the same time. The laboratory mainly carries out: interference and diffraction experiment, photoelectric experiment, quantum mechanics theory simulation and atomic spectrum experiment.

    Features:

    Contrary to the traditional universities in China, the experimental form focuses on cultivating students’ experimental exploration ability. The photoelectric experiment and quantum mechanics simulation experiment are different from similar experiments in domestic universities.

  • Thermal Physics Laboratory

    The Thermal Physics Laboratory is mainly used for experiments related to university physics: thermal physics. The laboratory is 105 square meters in total, and can accommodate 10 groups of students, with a maximum of 30 people at the same time. Experiments that can be carried out in this lab include ideal gas law, thermal properties of materials, simulation of statistical mechanics theory and phase transition.

    Features:

    This laboratory has a large number of independently designed pieces of equipment and experimental procedures. The experimental form is different from that of traditional universities in China, and it focuses on cultivating students’ experimental exploration ability. Some experiments are seldomly seen in domestic universities.

  • Electromagnetism Laboratory

    The Electromagnetism Laboratory is mainly used for experiments related to university physics: electromagnetism. The laboratory is 105 m2in total, and can accommodate 10 groups of students, with a maximum of 30 people at the same time. The laboratory is designed for undergraduates majoring in engineering. These experiments will provide students with a comprehensive understanding and practice of representative experiments in electromagnetic-related fields, including electrostatics, circuits, magnetism, electromagnetism, signal transmission, and geometrical optics.

    Features:

    The laboratory equipment is mainly composed of four electrical sets, voltage power supply and optical bench, supplemented by independently designed equipment by reference to that of the UIUC lab. Students can use laboratory equipment to complete many common experiments in electromagnetic-related fields. Contrary to the traditional universities in China, the experimental form focuses on cultivating students’ experimental exploration ability.

  • Mechanics Laboratory

    The Mechanics Laboratory is mainly used for experiments related to university physics mechanics. The laboratory is 105 m2in total, and can accommodate 10 groups of students, with a maximum of 30 people at the same time. It is intended for undergraduate students with foundation skills in mathematics and a deep interest in physics. It systematically lays out the principles of mechanics: vectors, Newton’s laws, momentum, energy, rotational motion, angular momentum, and the harmonic oscillator, etc.

    Features:

    The laboratory equipment is all designed and provided by PASCO (US). With a frictionless cart guide system as the core, the laboratory can enable students to complete all the common experiments related to classical mechanics. Contrary to the traditional universities in China, the experimental form focuses on cultivating students’ experimental exploration ability.

  • Future Transportation Laboratory

    The Future Transportation Laboratory is equipped with advanced hardware and software learning tools to allow students to have practical applications and a comprehensive understanding of future urban transportation systems. Currently, we have self-driving simulators, Prescan and Vissim simulation software, Drones, and VR system. These can operate in closed-loop and offline and online mode to support our research on traffic micro-simulation modeling, connected and autonomous vehicles, traffic prediction and management, and network reliability. This lab can complement some courses, such as Traffic Capacity Analysis and Transportation Engineering, to enhance learners’ experience of the real-world operation of smart transport systems.

    Features:

    Future Transportation Lab is equipped with driverless simulators, VR systems, drone equipment, and PTV Vissim and Prescan traffic simulation software for students to operate and learn. Based on these software and hardware equipment, field traffic investigation and data collection, multi-scene and multi-mode traffic simulation, unmanned driving simulation, VR virtual experiment and other related experimental courses can be carried out, and vehicle dynamics research, driver behavior analysis, road capacity analysis and unmanned driving research can be supported.

  • Construction Materials & Geotechnical Laboratory

    Features:

    The Construction Materials & Geotechnical Laboratory is built to carry out a number of experimental courses of civil/structural engineering, geotechnical engineering and to strengthen students’ understanding of construction and building materials and  structural and geotechnical courses, providing them with the opportunity to improve their hands-on practical ability and capacity. The laboratory is equipped with well-designed facilities for civil engineering materials (e.g., concrete, mortar, etc.), production, and curing. The axial compression, bending and torsion tests in terms of medium and small structural members can be performed with the help of two 500kN loading frames. High-strain rate tests for building materials are also engaged using a Split-Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) with three different diameters. In addition, the trial-axial, direct shear, and consolidate equipment enable the basic geotechnical tests.

    The laboratory complements courses like Behavior of Materials (CEE300), Structural Engineering (CEE360), Geotechnical Engineering (CEE380), and Concrete Materials (CEE401), with perhaps more to be included, providing the learner with an enriched experience and insight into the work of Construction Materials & Geotechnical Materials.

  • Computer Aided Design Laboratory

    The Computer Aided Design Laboratory is 180 m2. It is equipped with 43 PCs, including 42 computers for students, 1 workstation for faculty and multimedia teaching facilities. The computers in the Computer Aided Design Lab are installed with general application software, analytical and modelling software, office software, mathematical software, and other computer aided software. This lab supports both Windows and Linux operating systems.

    Features:

    The Computer Aided Design Lab undertakes some essential tasks related to computer aided supplementary teaching, and offers courses on operation applications and aided designs in electrical and computer engineering, computer science and mechanical engineering. It takes on curriculum implementation, project designs, competitions, and other practical teaching tasks. This lab supports the Linux operating system, and is available 24/7. Course discussion and exams are also supported by this lab.

  • Computer Integrated Laboratory

    The Computer Integrated Laboratory is 300 square meters. It is equipped with 89 PCs, including 88 computers for students (8 of which are GPU workstations), and 1 workstation for faculty and multimedia teaching facilities. The computers in the Computer Integrated Lab are installed with general application software, office software, analytical and modelling software, mathematical software, and other computer aided software.

    Features:

    The Computer Integrated Lab facilitates consolidation of theoretical knowledge and hands-on capabilities for students. When students get familiar with PC operation, they can further improve their comprehension of professional knowledge. This lab is mainly for high level courses in electrical and computer engineering, computer science and mechanical engineering, as well as project designs, discussions, and exams.

  • Energy Conversion Laboratory

    The Energy Conversion Laboratory covers an area of 100 m2. This lab is equipped with flame propagation and characteristics measurement test bench, plane opposed flame test bench, combustion component measurement test bench, small gas turbine distributed generation system test platform, and other equipment. These resources enable research into flame combustion phenomena, as well as the conversion of chemical energy, mechanical energy, and electrical energy.

    Features:

    The laboratory focuses on combustion experiments, thermodynamics experiments, air compressor and gas turbine power generation and other experimental platforms, covering the basic principle experiments involved in the energy conversion process, and the performance and efficiency test experiments of several common machines used in energy conversion.

  • Design Studio

    The Design Studio covers an area of 75 m2. This lab is mainly used for student course design, competitions, etc, providing a spacious processing area.

    Through these tools, students can understand the assembly process of components. With the processing ability of the Rapid Prototyping Laboratory, Innovation Design Laboratory and Design for Manufacturability Laboratory, the assembly space required for making products and machines is provided for students who carry out design experiments, SRTP, and extracurricular interest competitions

    The Rapid Prototyping Laboratory covers a total area of 150 m2. This lab is equipped with ordinary FDM 3D printers, double-nozzle 3D printers, large size 3D printers and SLA 3D printer, and other equipment.

    Features:

    The laboratory is equipped with various types of 3D printers, so is an important place for students to participate in design experiments, Student Research Training Projects and extracurricular interest competitions. Through 3D printing technology, students can quickly turn their ideas and designs into various parts and assemble them into products.

This lab is equipped with universal testing machine, fatigue testing machine, structural loading frame, thermal conductivity tester, three-dimensional dynamic displacement measuring system, LVDT, pendulum impact testing machine, Brinell hardness tester, Rockwell hardness tester, metallographic microscope, electric forklift, mechanical arm, CNC engraving machine, cold rolling mill, heat treatment furnace, quenching tank, torque tester, creep tester, and other equipment.

    Features:

    The laboratory integrates the experimental equipment related to material property tests in Mechanical Engineering and Civil Engineering. The two majors share multiple equipment, which enables the laboratory to cover a wide range of tests, including material strength, hardness, fatigue resistance, impact, heat treatment, three-dimensional dynamic displacement measurement, and so on.

  • Heat Transfer Lab

    The Heat Transfer Laboratory covers an area of 80 m2. This laboratory is equipped with temperature measurement calibration bench, thermal imager, infrared thermometer, convection and radiation combined test bench, natural convection and forced convection test bench, linear heat conduction test bench, shell and tube heat exchanger, plate heat exchanger, tube heat exchanger, and other equipment.

    Features:

    Through the use of various temperature measuring instruments, students can understand the differences between various temperature measurement methods. Students also experiment on testers with a variety of heat transfer modes and their combinations, and verify the differences between measurement results and theoretical calculation. Two design experiments are set up to let students solve the practical heat transfer problem.

  • Fluid Dynamics Laboratory

    The Fluid Dynamics Laboratory covers a total area of 100 square meters and is equipped with facilities such as a fluid property testing bench, pump performance testing station, visualization flume, and water bench. These resources facilitate the testing of fluid properties and the study of flow phenomena encountered in engineering contexts.

    Features:

    This laboratory integrates a variety of fluid calculations and testing experiments that are encountered in both mechanical and civil engineering. It not only facilitates the study of several flows of engineering significance but also allows for an in-depth exploration of various fluid measurement techniques. Additionally, in this lab, we have set up design-oriented experiments with an emphasis on fun and engagement. Through the measurement of fluid parameters, participants will calculate and design a fountain system.

  • Design for Manufacturability Lab

    The Design for Manufacturability Laboratory covers a total area of 100 m2. It is equipped with a machining center, a CNC milling machine, an injection molding machine, and other equipment, enabling conventional operations such as rapid metal cutting and milling, as well as injection molding processes. Additionally, the lab supports advanced selective laser melting technology, which allows for the direct printing of design models into metal products.

    Features:  

    The laboratory not only has traditional metal and plastic processing equipment, but also new processing equipment such as selective laser melt technology. Through lab sessions, students get hands-on exposure to NC turning and milling, CAD/CAM, rapid prototyping, injection molding, and other manufacturing processes. They also can make comparisons with 3D designing, understand the processing effect of traditional and new manufacturing technology, and then gain product development experience through creating products.

  • Power Engineering Laboratory

    The Power Engineering Laboratory is a comprehensive electrical laboratory integrating both teaching and scientific research functions. This laboratory was built in 2019, with an area of about 200 m2equipped with 10 sets of Power Electronics & Machine Drive Integrated Test Benches. The laboratory has internal AC/DC micro grid, controllable 380Vac, ±200Vdc, ±500Vdc, 8 channel oscilloscope, network analyzer, etc.

    Features:

    The design scheme of the laboratory is from the world-class UIUC Grainger Electrical Engineering Laboratory in the United States, which is planned and designed by IEEE fellow Philip Krein. The design of the laboratory supports the teaching and experiments of many courses, such as Power Electronic Technology and Electrical Machinery. The power capacity of the laboratory is up to 100kW, and the construction of a motor to tow platform, AC/DC micro grid platform, can meet the needs of electrical engineering related research such as large capacity motor, converter test, and power system dynamic simulation experiment.

  • Control Systems and Robotics Instructional Laboratory

    This lab was constructed in 2019. It has 170 sqm area, equipped with benches, I/O interface, Optical Breadboard, pendulum kit, Oscilloscopes, DC power suppliers, function generators, Coupled Tank, Hydraulic system test bench, and computers with software Matlab and LabVIEW.

    Feature

    The Control Laboratory is designed to enhance the learning experience of our students, providing them with opportunity to engage in hands-on work and better appreciate the practical aspects of the classroom material. The facility is equipped with carefully designed hardware and software learning tools providing realistic exposures to practical control systems for the students. The Laboratory complements courses like Dynamics of Mechanical Systems, Signal Processing, Control Systems, and perhaps more to be included, providing the learner an enriched experience into the work of Control Systems.

  • Communications and IoT Laboratory

    The laboratory covers a total area of 150 m2 and is equipped with 16 benches. It is equipped with multimeter, DC power supply, oscilloscope, RADIO frequency signal source, USRP, spectrum analyzer, network analyzer, and other instruments. Labview and Labview Communication and other software are installed on the computer.

    Features:

    This laboratory can provide students with a basic RF experiment environment, in which students can carry out experiments related to wireless communication and the IoTs, and also carry out scientific research projects related to wireless communication and IoTs. The digital communication experiments provided by the lab mainly use USRP and Labview communication to enable students to learn how to design, configure, and evaluate digital communication systems. The course introduces students to various components of digital transceivers and covers various IoTs communication technologies currently in use.

  • Electronic Development Laboratory

    The Electronic Development Laboratory covers a total area of 290 m2. The laboratory is equipped with 18 benches, digital multimeter, oscilloscope, DC power supply, and signal generator. The laboratory is also equipped with reflow welding, automatic bonding machine, and other equipment.

    Features:

    In addition to teaching related courses, the Electronic Development Laboratory is also a place for students of all majors in ZJUI to engage in creative work outside the classroom, such as student research training projects or interest groups. In this laboratory, students can carry out project discussions, design, debugging, assembly, welding and other activities related to electronic circuits, providing experimental space for students to carry out scientific research training and mutual cooperation.

  • Electronic Circuits Laboratory

    The Electronic Circuits Laboratory is about 80 m2. The laboratory contains 10 work benches, and each work bench is equipped with a DMM, an oscilloscope, a DC power supply, and a function generator. The computer on each bench has Matlab and the upper machine software of Oscilloscope already installed.

    Features:

    This laboratory is mainly designed for the Electronic Circuits course, and all Juniors on Electronic Engineering and Computer Engineering need to take this course. This course is combined with the ADLAM1000 learning kit to familiarize students with the basic characteristics of various electronic components, including diodes, transistors, and MOSFET. In the final project, students independently design a heartbeat detection system and can add additional functions according to the actual situation.

  • Analog Signal Processing Laboratory

    The Analog Signal Processing Laboratory is about 80 m2. The laboratory contains 10 work benches, and each work bench is equipped with a DMM, an oscilloscope, a DC power supply, and a function generator. The computer on each bench has Matlab and the upper machine software of Oscilloscope already installed.

    Features:

    This laboratory is mainly designed for the Analog Signal Processing course, and all Sophmores on Electronic Engineering and Computer Engineering need to take this course. Through the study of this course, students can become familiar with the construction and debugging of amplifying circuits, ultimately building a radio receiving circuit that can receive an AM signal of a specific frequency. This lab can be used to give lectures, have discussions, and do experiments. It also provides students with the opportunities to design, debug, and test the circuits.

    Features:

          This lab can be used to give lecture, have discussion and do the experiment, also provide students the opportunities to design, debug, and test the circuits.

    This laboratory is mainly design for the course of Introduction to Electronics, and all the freshman of Electronic Engineer, Computer Engineer and Mechanical Engineering need to take this course. Through the study of this course, students can design and implement simple analog circuits by themselves, and they can use the autonomous vehicle to complete a series of instructions or tasks by digital or analog methods.     Equipment

    The laboratory contains 12 work benches, and each work bench is equipped with a DMM, an Oscilloscope, a DC power supply and a function generation. Also the Computer on each bench has already install matlab and the upper machine software of Oscilloscope.

  • Organic Chemistry Teaching Laboratory

    The Organic Chemistry Teaching Laboratory has two teaching labs: E503/505E507/509. It has an area of 264 m2, and is equipped with, e.g., rotary evaporator, melting point instrument, vacuum pump, magnetic stirrer, balance, Hume hood, etc.

    Features:

    The lab is open to ZJE-UoE. College Chemistry Laboratory is the companion laboratory course to CHEM1001. Four experiments are performed: Physical properties of chemicals: melting point, sublimation; Column chromatography and TLC: separation of a mixture; Resolution of a mixture by distillation experiment; Preparation and recrystallization of acetylsalicylic acid (Aspirin). This course allows students to gain familiarity with laboratory techniques and apparatus, and to apply the chemical principles from CHEM1001 in an actual laboratory situation.

  • General Chemistry Teaching Laboratory

    The General Chemistry Teaching Laboratory has two teaching labs: E403/405E407/409. It has an area of 264 m2 and is equipped with, e.g., spectrophotometer, balance, pH meter, heater, Fume hood. Experiments include Beer’s law and food dyes, Determination of the molar mass of an unknown compound, Calorimetry and Hess’s law, Determining the value of an equilibrium constant for a chemical reaction, Determination of a solubility product, Ksp, etc.

    Features:

    The lab is open to all majors on the International Campus. The course, offered concurrently with the theoretical course, aims not just to prove and consolidate the basic theoretical knowledge obtained from class, but also to develop experimental skills and the ability to analyze and solve problems that are encountered in the research lab. The students gain familiarity with laboratory techniques and apparatus, and learn to apply the chemical principles from the theoretical course to an actual laboratory situation.

  • Innovation Design Lab

    The Innovation Design Laboratory includes a multi-functional studio and a woodworking studio, and has a total area of 370 m2. The multi-functional studio is equipped with 3D printers, laser cutters and other mechanical processing equipment, oscilloscope, multimeter, signal generator and other electronic analysis and measurement equipment, as well as measurement and welding workbenches. The woodworking workshop is equipped with table saw, band saw, wire saw, drilling machine, bevel saw, and electric hand drill.

    Features:  

    This laboratory is not only utilized for teaching design related courses, but is also a place for students of all majors in ZJUI to engage in creative work such as SRTP and contests of scientific and technological work. Students can cut, carve, and process various materials and rapid prototype components. They can design, assemble, analyze and measure circuits, measure dimensions and welding materials. This laboratory provides experimental space for students of different majors to cooperate with one another to complete some projects.
