Smart, Sustainable, Shared|The Opening Ceremony & Orientation of Smart City Module, 2024 SDG Global Summer School, ZJU was successfully held

On 16th July, the Opening Ceremony & Orientation of Smart City Module, 2024 SDG Global Summer School, ZJU was successfully held in the Multifunctional Hall of International Campus, ZJU. Prof. Li Hanying, Dean of International Campus, ZJU, Prof. Lee Der-Horng, Dean of ZJUI, Prof. Ma Hao, Vice Dean of ZJUI and Director of the Smart City Module, Assistant Prof. Wang Gao’ang and Assistant Prof. Yang Hao (Howard), faculty representatives of the Smart City Module, attended the ceremony. More than 20 students from the University of Hong Kong, Polytechnic University of Madrid, Spain, University of Bristol, UK, Zhejiang University, Xi'an Jiaotong University and other global universities and institutions are attending the Smart City Module program. The opening ceremony was hosted by Prof. Wang Hongwei, Vice Dean of ZJUI.

Prof. Li Hanying extended a warm welcome to the students participating in this module. He highlighted that in recent years, Zhejiang University has consistently embraced the concept of sustainable development, and has successfully organized SDG Global Summer School for two consecutive years, attracting thousands of outstanding students from more than 350 universities across 80 countries and regions worldwide. At the same time, International Campus has been practicing the concept of sustainable development from student cultivation, innovative research, green campus, etc., and focusing on advancing technological innovations such as smart cities, digital health, and artificial intelligence by taking the construction of International Collaborative Education Model as a driving force, with the aim of establishing a global high-quality education center and dynamic hub for high-level science and technology innovation. Finally, he encouraged every student to approach this module with curiosity, enthusiasm, and  a willingness to collaborate and think outside the box.

Prof. Lee Der-Horng introduced the history and development of ZJUI. He emphasized that ZJUI has always been dedicated to integrating world-class educational resources from both the East and the West, transcending traditional disciplinary boundaries, and focusing on cultivating cross-disciplinary students with international perspective, global competitiveness, and world responsibilites. The Smart City module, led by ZJUI, includes both online and offline courses and is offered in collaboration with prestigious overseas partners such as the University of Cambridge, Imperial College London, University of Washington, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and Singapore University of Technology and Design, creating a comprehensive platform for students to understand the concept of smart cities, acquire relevant foundational knowledge, and embrace the responsibility of global sustainable development. He hoped that students could approach this module with humility, curiosity, and a commitment to collaboration, broadening horizons and embracing a global perspective.

Prof. Ma Hao briefly introduced the 14-day offline course program of the Smart City module. This program starts with two cutting-edge, interdisciplinary fields: "Intelligent Internet of Things and Intelligent Service Robots" and "Intelligent Transportation & Smart Mobility." Through classroom teaching, group discussions, field trip, and cultural activities, the module aims to deepen students' understanding of the connotation and realization path of smart cities in a globalized context. He expected students to thoroughly explore the knowledge of smart city and engage in cross-cultural exchanges during the 14-day program, to work together to create a sustainable and shared global future.

Assistant Prof. Wang Gao’ang hoped that the Smart City Module would bring unique knowledge and experience to the students, and at the same time, the students would be able to make the journey worthwhile and rewarding. Student representative Tu Youyang expressed her expectation for the Module, which also reflected the students' concern and action for sustainable development.
