On January 12th, a topping off ceremony was held for the first multi-story modern bamboo building developed and designed by Prof. Xiao's research group of ZJUI at the Zhejiang University (Ninghai) Joint Research Center for Bio-based Materials and Carbon Neutral Development. This building situated at the southern foot of Feifeng Mountain and has been constructed under the support of Ninghai Chengtou Group Co., Ltd. The building embodies the research achievements of the group over the past 20 years under multiple research projects funded by National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), Zhejiang University Center for Balance Architecture, etc., and reflects the latest bamboo and wood structure technology at home and abroad. It is expected to become a landmark building for studying bamboo structures, providing a platform for interdisciplinary research on biomass materials and bamboo structures, and a showcasing for biomass materials and structural technology.
Prof. Xiao Yan, Qiushi Chair Professor and the founding director of the joint research center, introduced that the multi-story bamboo structure building has a total of 6 floors, and the upper part of the structure will also be equipped with fire facilities and vibration control water tanks, with a total height of about 21 meters and a total construction area of 790 square meters. It is known as the world's first and highest engineered bamboo building.
ZJUI doctoral student Wu Ruijia and other students have conducted multiple thematic studies on the R&D, design, processing, and construction of the bamboo structure building, including earthquake response simulation analysis, framed shear wall experiments and calculations, innovation of new nodes, and carbon footprint analysis of bamboo structure buildings. In the future, relying on this building, further international cooperation research will be carried out in various aspects such as health monitoring, wind-induced vibration monitoring, forced vibration testing and control, digital twin analysis and testing, creep and ductility of structural components, indoor and outdoor environmental assessment, acoustic testing, and comfort testing, etc.
In order to practice the UN Sustainable Development Goals, focus on the national "Dual Carbon" strategy, and strive to achieve high-quality green development, Prof. Xiao Yan's group has long been committed to the basic and applied research of biomass materials. Bamboo, as a green and low-carbon material, has a long history of use in construction and has enormous potential for application in achieving carbon neutrality goals. Since the establishment of the Zhejiang University (Ninghai) Joint Research Center for Bio-based Materials and Carbon Neutral Development in May 2021, Prof. Xiao's group has actively carried out cooperation with Ninghai government, developed several proprietary bamboo, wood, and composite structure IPR technologies, design specifications. Collaborating with local industry, the center also prefabricated and installed multiple bamboo wood structure buildings in Zhejiang, Hebei, Hunan and other places, effectively improving the level of bamboo and wood engineering industry, promoting the basic and applied research of biomass materials.
