On July 1st, the BEST program, jointly organized by Zhejiang University-University of Illinois Urbana Champaign Institute (ZJUI) and the Beasiswa Indonesia Maju Scholarship Program of the Ministry of Education of Indonesia, officially opened at the International Campus, Zhejiang University. 20 Indonesian high school students and 2 teachers came from afar to participate in this summer training program. The purpose of this program is to strengthen the continuous and in-depth cooperation between Zhejiang University and the Government of Indonesia in intellectual cultivation, help students learn cutting-edge engineering knowledge, strengthen experimental and practical skills, experience different cultures, and expand their international vision.
Qu Lijuan, Vice Dean of International Campus, ZJU, and Academician LEE Der-Horng, Dean of ZJUI, attended the ceremony and delivered speeches. Prof. Yohanes Surya, Advisor to the Minister of the Ministry of Coordination and Investment of Indonesia, delivered a video speech. The opening ceremony was presided over by Prof. Ma Hao, Vice Dean of ZJUI.
Qu Lijuan extended her warmest welcome on behalf of the International Campus of Zhejiang University to esteemed guests from Indonesia and introduced the history and development of Zhejiang University. She stressed that the International Campus always adheres to the open mind with a global perspective, and wholeheartedly welcomes students and teachers from all over the world to come to Zhejiang to jointly stimulate innovation, meet challenges, and work hard to build a community with a shared future for mankind. She encouraged outstanding young people from Indonesia to fully utilize this opportunity, actively interact with faculty members and students in the international campus from diverse cultural backgrounds, experience Chinese culture, learn scientific knowledge, and lay a solid foundation for their future academic and career development.
Academician LEE Der-Horng, Dean of ZJUI, extended his heartfelt gratitude to the Indonesian government and briefly introduced ZJUI and the 13-day program. He expressed the hope that the outstanding Indonesian youth will actively nurture a passion for learning, foster creativity, and innovation, and take advantage of this opportunity to engage with distinguished faculty members in ZJUI, ask questions, and delve into meaningful discussions. Through hands-on experiments and insightful company visits, the program aims to assist them in understanding cutting-edge knowledge, mastering experimental techniques, and expanding their understanding of the application of relevant technologies and industrial knowledge.
Prof. Yohanes surya delivered a video speech. He expressed gratitude to Zhejiang University and ZJUI for providing such an outstanding summer training program and encouraged Indonesian students to work hard and dare to explore, strive to become cultural ambassadors of the two countries, master cutting-edge disciplinary knowledge, jointly face global challenges, and strive for human welfare.

In recognition of the outstanding contributions made by Zhejiang University and Indonesia in international education collaboration, Indonesian representative Mr. Abdul Karim awarded the International Partner Trophy of the Ministry of Education of Indonesia to Zhejiang University. The program leader, Associate Prof. Weeliat Ong of ZJUI, received the honor as a representative.
This program will last for two weeks. We believe that through enriching lectures, hands-on experiments, insightful company visits and cultural exchanges, the program will not only enrich the knowledge of Indonesian high school students, broaden their international horizons, and help them understand Chinese culture, but also deepen the friendly relationship between students, faculty members, and universities of the two countries. It will lay a more solid foundation for educational exchange and cooperation and intellectual cultivation between both sides.
