Recently, the “Integrated computing and collaborative learning of abstract cross-modal knowledge” declared by Prof. WANG Hongwei, Vice Dean of ZJUI, was approved as a major program of the Basic Public Welfare Research Project of the Natural Science Foundation of Zhejiang Province (Innovation Groups). Major programs (Innovation Groups) are launched by the Natural Science Foundation of Zhejiang Province for the first time this year. The Innovation Center has applied for several major programs in groups, aiming to encourage interdisciplinarity and group innovation and gather strengths in the field to focus on major scientific challenges. The approval of the program is the first time that the international campus, Zhejiang University has undertaken this type of program as the host.

The innovation group program "Research on Basic Theory and Key Algorithms of Cross modal Intelligent Computing" corresponds with the artificial intelligence field in the guide. It aims to promote the theoretical innovation of cross modal intelligent computing through the cross integration of mathematics, electronics, information systems, computer science and other disciplines, and focuses on solving important scientific problems such as cross modal collaborative learning and intelligent reasoning. This program application has gathered scientific research units and key enterprises with important research foundation and strong scientific research strength in relevant fields in the province, including Zhejiang University, Zhejiang University of Technology, Wenzhou University, Hangzhou Dianzi University, Institute of Artificial Intelligence in Beihang University, Hikvision, etc. These universities and enterprises possessing superior scientific research strength will carry out research work around different scientific issues, and at the same time, they will make overall efforts to link up and jointly tackle key problems, finally put forward a complete set of basic theories and key algorithms of cross modal intelligent computing, and carry out application verification in key areas, contributing to improving the research and development level of Zhejiang Province in the field of cross modal intelligent computing.

The program “Integrated computing and collaborative learning of abstract cross-modal knowledge” focuses on the fusion computing and collaborative learning method of abstract cross modal knowledge around the key core technology breakthrough and major application requirements of cross modal intelligent computing. For the cross-modal data such as text, image, voice and video in complex scenes, the brain-inspired theory is deeply integrated into the cross-modal knowledge collaborative learning method to achieve an efficient unstructured cross modal information representation and memory mechanism and establish a systematic cross modal knowledge collaborative learning system. The successful implementation of this program will provide theoretical and technical support for the application of brain like computing in the cross-modal field, promote the tackling of key problems and in-depth integration and application of the core technologies of the new generation of artificial intelligence, and the corresponding research results will serve the fields of smart cities, intelligent manufacturing, smart medicine, etc.

The program is led by Prof. WANG Hongwei, and many young faculties of ZJUI such as Assist Prof. WANG Gao’ang, Assist Prof. LIU Zuozhu, Assist Prof. ZHANG Meng and Assist Prof. YANG Hao will also participate in the program. It is reported that in 2022, the Guidelines for Major Programs (Innovation Groups) of the Natural Science Foundation of Zhejiang Province only designated a number of strategic areas of great significance to the economic development and construction of Zhejiang Province. The successful approval of this program indicates that the research of the international campus, Zhejiang University in related fields has entered the first echelon of major basic research in Zhejiang Province.
