On the morning of November 4, the experience-sharing meeting of 2022 Application for the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and 2023 Application Mobilization Meeting of ZJUI were held. This activity invited Prof. WANG Hongwei, Vice Dean of ZJUI, Assist Prof. Yasutaka Narazaki, and Assist. Prof. ZHANG Meng, whose proposals were funded in 2022 to share experiences. The activity was hosted by Assoc. Prof. ONG Wee-Liat. ZJUI faculty members and post-doctoral researchers participated in the activity.

Prof. WANG Hongwei introduced the overall situation of ZJUI's application for NSFC in 2022 and shared the application experience of the General Program of NSFC from the aspects of information collection, preparation, and topic selection skills. He also took his own application failure as an example, stressing that attention should be paid to details when writing the research content. He also hoped that all researchers would attach importance to the application of the fund and make full preparations as soon as possible. He said that ZJUI would further strengthen the relevant support services, and work together with faculty to achieve another success in the fund application in 2023.

From the perspective of a foreign principal investigator, Assist Prof. Yasutaka Narazaki proposed that the topic selection should meet the actual needs of China's development, and shared the experience of the application for the Research Fund for International Scientists from the aspects of preparation, writing skills, modification, and improvement.

Taking his own proposal as an example, Assist. Prof. ZHANG Meng explained the application for Young Scientists Fund, NSFC in detail, and shared his opinions on the selection of application code and types of scientific questions, as well as on the writing of research content, technical roadmap and preliminary results. He also concluded some common reasons for application failure.

▲ ZJUI Programs approved by NSFC in 2022
It is reported that ZJUI has made great achievements in the application of NSFC programs in 2022. Eight programs have been successfully approved so far with interdisciplinary and international characteristics, covering such frontier fields as artificial intelligence, new materials, information technology and civil engineering. Among them, there are 2 General Programs, 3 Young Scientists Fund Programs, 2 programs supported by the Research Fund for International Young Scientists, and 1 Joint Fund Integration Project for Enterprise Innovation and Development, with a total funding of CNY 4.458 million.
