Competitive with graduate students, but won the third prize in the thesis competition
-- ZJUI sophomores won the third prize in the student paper competition of cross-strait college students' and students' civil engineering inspection and control seminar
Recently, good news came from the 10th Cross-Strait Seminar on Civil Engineering Inspection and Control for Teachers and Students. Wang Chen, a sophomore majoring in electronic and computer engineering, won the third prize of the student paper competition for his excellent paper and excellent ability of on-site report and defense.
Wang was the only undergraduate student to take part in the competition. Nearly 100 other participants were all postgraduate or doctoral students.
Although the theoretical basis was weak compared with other contestants, Wang Chen, under the guidance of his supervisor Dr. Li Binbin, assistant professor of our school, through careful preparation and unremitting efforts, won the highest score in the field report and defense of his team's paper, and finally won the third prize.
The paper "Modal Recognition of Bridge Structures Based on Fast Bayesian FFT" was co-authored by Su Yipeng from Electronic and Computer Engineering, Li Haoran from Electrical Engineering and Automation, and Shen Yueqi from Civil Engineering.
This paper originated from the summer laboratory internship program. ZJUI provides students with abundant summer laboratory or enterprise internship opportunities every year. Wang Chen took advantage of the internship opportunity in the summer vacation of his freshman year to join Li Binbin's project team.The project team is a good reflection of ZJUI's concept of cross-innovation and cultivation. Students from different majors discuss and study together and solve civil engineering problems with algorithms.In this paper, Wang's team introduces the probabilistic model and solving strategy of the fast Bayesian FFT algorithm, and takes the modal parameter identification of a footpath cable-stayed bridge as an example to demonstrate its practical application.Different from the traditional recognition algorithms, the fast Bayesian FFT algorithm aims to calculate the posterior probability distribution of modal parameters, and provides the identification uncertainty while calculating the Bayesian estimation of modal parameters, which has important scientific and engineering significance.
On August 23rd and 26th, Li Binbin led Wang Chen to Wuhan to attend the 10th (2019) Cross-Strait Seminar on Civil Engineering Monitoring and Control for College Students and Students, which was the first time for Wang Chen to attend an academic conference.Nearly 100 students from Tsinghua University, Tongji University, Dalian University of Technology, Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics and other universities participated in the student paper competition.Although it was the first time for Zjui to compete with graduate students, Wang Chen said that he was not nervous at all. "First, Zjui had many opportunities to give presentations in his usual courses, and second, he prepared the speech and PPT carefully by himself, who had practiced the speech for more than ten times and knew the manuscript by heart."For the final got this good result, Wang Chen has been humbly expressed that it is trivial.He was very grateful to Mr. Li Binbin and Dr. Xie Yanlong for their careful guidance. His achievements were largely attributed to the guidance and help of the teachers.Through participating in such academic conferences and paper competitions, he became interested in scientific research, gained insight and inspired him, and had a clearer understanding of his future career and development direction. He indicated that he might continue to conduct in-depth research in this interdisciplinary field in the future.
Instructor Li Binbin also said that it is very valuable for a first-year undergraduate student to participate in the essay competition and win the prize.This can't be attributed to his hard work. During the one-month summer training, he kept asking questions, tried to understand every detail, and put a lot of effort in writing the paper and preparing the conference report.In addition, this award is the result of team efforts. Su Yipeng, Li Haoran and Shen Yueqi, three members of the team, cooperated in the summer project, learned from each other and completed the research topic together.He also hopes that this experience can stimulate students' enthusiasm to participate in scientific research and add new impetus to their undergraduate study.
When it comes to cross innovation, Mr Li said the emerging data science offers a new way to solve the problem of traditional civil engineering, such as the structure of safety state evaluation, just rely on traditional mechanics analysis could not be achieved, the solution of the problem should be combined with physical modeling (positive) and data analysis (inverse problem) two aspects.Professor Li's research is to introduce the basic principles of data science into the research of civil engineering to realize the organic combination of positive and negative analysis of civil engineering models, which is also in line with the theme of ZJUI's interdisciplinary and converging research.
