Recently, the project "Research on Ecological Structure System of Prefabricated Houses in Villages and Towns" organized and participated by Professor Xiao Yan of our college has been funded by the National Key Research and Development Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology in 2019 "Technological Innovation of Green Livable Villages". This project, led by Professor Chen Zhihua of Tianjin University, consists of five subjects. The research group led by Professors Xiao Yan and DeMartino is responsible for the project of "Key Technology of Low-cost Assembled Compound Ecological Bamboo Structure System" and the sub-project of "Intelligent Construction Technology of Low-cost Bamboo Structure", and has received a total funding of 7.73 million RMB. Relevant research will combine ecological bamboo and modern assembly and intelligent industrial technology to carry out a series of research and large-scale promotion and application of low-cost assembly-type compound ecological bamboo structure housing, so as to provide green, ecological and sustainable advanced scientific and technological support for the improvement of human living environment in villages and towns in China and the construction of beautiful villages.

        Under the international trend of sustainable and green development, Professor Xiao Yan has taken the lead in developing a number of modern biomass building materials and bamboo structure patented technologies represented by GluBam since 2005, combining the advanced modern wood structure development in industrialized countries such as Europe, America and Japan with the abundant bamboo forest resources in China. The technology was named Best of What's New in 2008 by Popular Science magazine in 2018. Professor Xiao's research has been supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) Key Program, General Program and Blue Moon Foundation of the United States. He has also published more than 50 influential academic papers in high-level academic journals at home and abroad. Its modern bamboo structure including light and heavy bamboo house system structure frame, steel structure system and bamboo, concrete - bamboo, bamboo large-span roof truss structure system, bamboo bridge structure system, and bamboo structure housing system, etc., and carried out both at home and abroad including the wenchuan earthquake relief temporary classrooms and dormitories, and other demonstration projects. Through many years of efforts, Professor Xiao Yan has created the modern engineering bamboo structure, which is in line with the concept of sustainable development, originated from China and led the international research field, and has gained extensive attention from scholars at home and abroad. At the same time, he has trained more than 40 postdocs, doctors and masters who are active in universities and engineering units at home and abroad.
