International Workshop on Electromagnetic Compatibility of Integrated Circuits hosted at ZJUI

On October 21, 2019, the three-day 12th International Workshop on the Electromagnetic Compatibility of Integrated Circuits and the 6th Juanhu Lake Salon was launched at the Multimedia Hall on the International Campus (IC), Zhejiang University (ZJU). The conference was being held in China for the first time since its inception in 1999. Prof. Zhang Yueping (Nanyang Technological University, Singapore), Prof. Joungho Kim (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology), Thomas Steinecke (Infineon Technologies, Germany), Prof. Etienne Sicard (University of Toulouse, France) and more than 180 other experts and scholars from home and overseas attended the conference. Cao Guoliang, Mayor of Haining Municipal Government, and Prof. Fu Qiang, Assistant President of Zhejiang University, Secretary of the Party Working Committee and Vice Dean of the International Campus, ZJU, attended the conference.

Etienne Sicard, a founding scientist of Electromagnetic Compatibility of Integrated Circuits (IC EMC) Research and Standards and professor of the University of Toulouse, France, gave a keynote report entitled “Technology Trends and Electromagnetic Compatibility of Integrated Circuits”, which covered many research interests for the experts and scholars. Prof. Zhang Yueping from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, discussed the four basic aspects of AIP technology, including design, manufacture, testing, and application in a talk entitled “Antenna-in-Package (AiP) Technology:The Key to the Success of Millimeter-wave 5G”, and identified future directions in the further development of AIP technology. Prof. Joungho Kim of the Korea Advanced Science and Technology Research Institute, who is the Samsung IC EMC Research Specialist, gave a talk entitled “2.5D/3D Terabyte/s Bandwidth HBM (High-bandwidth Memory Module) Designs for Artificial Intelligence (AI) Computers”. He proposed high-bandwidth memory (HBM) solutions using TSV, SI middle-layer technology, and stacked memory architecture in order to satisfy the performance demands of the growing artificial intelligence servers. His opinions attracted the interest of many scholars. Thomas Steinecke, founding scientist of IC EMC Research and Standards in Germany, and chief scientist of Infineon Technologies, gave a report entitled “Plenary Talk IV: A chronicle of 22 years in microcontroller EMC business”. He spoke about his 22-year career in IC EMC, throughout which he has greatly inspired those who are interested in the research of chip level or system level EMC.

 

 

 

 

From 21 to 23 October, different parallel sessions of the conference which focused on the main theme as well as seminars, oral reports, and poster presentations were also outstanding. Internationally renowned scholars such as Franco Fiori, Masahiro Yamaguch, Shih-Yi Yuan, Bernd Deutschmann, Richard Xian-Ke Gao, Kamel Abouda, Sonia Ben Dhia, Zhongxiang Shen, Qingxin Chu, and Kaixue Ma all made exemplary reports. Experts and scholars from all over the world shared their research topics and achievements, and they exchanged information on, and discussed, the latest developments in the field of international electromagnetic compatibility. They also provided many constructive suggestions, and offered guidance, to colleagues engaged in IC EMC research.

 

 

Achievements in terms of operating frequency and integration of semiconductor technology are constantly creating new challenges in IC EMC, which must necessarily be addressed at both integrated circuits and system level. Keeping up-to-date is of paramount importance to be successful in this field. Since the inception of the 1st International IC EMC Workshop in Toulouse, France, in 1999, it has been held variously in Europe and once in Japan. The 12th EMC COMPO was held in China for the first time and proved to be a great success, highly praised by the participants.

 

There were 184 registered participants in the conference, 51 of whom were from overseas. The conference received 136 articles, including 91 articles from China and 45 from overseas; from among them, 120 articles were accepted. Four scholars of international stature were invited to make keynote reports. Many internationally renowned scholars were invited to conduct seminars on different topics in the parallel sessions. The 12th International Workshop on the Electromagnetic Compatibility of Integrated Circuits has enhanced the influence of ZJUI, and promoted academic communication between researchers in the field of electrical and electronic science in China and their international counterparts. It has also been a positive influence on the further development and technical cooperation of electronic and electrical disciplines at ZJUI.
