The Closing Ceremony of the Smart City module of the 2025 SDG Global Summer School was recently held at International Campus, Zhejiang University. Professor Lee Der-Horng, Dean of Zhejiang University–University of Illinois Urbana Champaign Institute (ZJUI), delivered a speech at the Ceremony. Professor Ma Hao, Vice Dean of ZJUI and Director of the Smart City Module, attended the ceremony. They presented certificates to participating students.

In the speech, Professor Lee Der-Horng expressed sincere gratitude to the faculty, teaching assistants, and staff, commending the students for their innovative thinking and practical abilities. He encouraged them to take this experience as a starting point to actively engage in smart city development and promote sustainable growth. He emphasized that in the face of global challenges, young people should lead with global awareness, creativity, and action to build a better future.
Students shared their reflections on the two-week program, highlighting their strengthened commitment to applying what they learned. Guided by experts from the University of Cambridge, National University of Singapore, University of Washington, and Zhejiang University, they explored the principles and implementation of smart cities and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, expanding both their knowledge and international outlook.
During field visits, students toured SUPCON to learn how technologies like control systems and the “City Brain” are transforming urban management. They also visited the YANGUAN Tides and Music Resort in Haining, where immersive experiences with traditional architecture and cultural heritage deepened their understanding of the interplay between local culture and modern urban concepts.
At the conclusion of the module, students expressed their appreciation for the academic and cultural experiences at ZJUI. The Smart City module provided a valuable interdisciplinary and cross-cultural learning platform. Looking ahead, the program will continue refining its curriculum and promoting international collaboration to cultivate globally minded, innovative elite in smart city development.
