Wen Jiaheng, class of 2025 in Computer Engineering of ZJUI

 

On the path of academic research and practice, he has demonstrated exceptional strength and unwavering pursuit. With outstanding performance, he has been awarded numerous honors such as the National Scholarship, Zhejiang Provincial Government Scholarship, and First-Class Scholarship of Zhejiang University. He has also been recognized with titles including "Outstanding Student", "Academic Excellence Model", and " Model of External Engagement " at Zhejiang University.

In terms of practice, as a key member of Room78 Algorithm Club of Zhejiang University, he offered an introductory course on C++ programming language for the campus during his freshman year, showcasing solid professional foundation.

He also excelled in sports competitions. He and his team partners won the championship of the First Volleyball Freshmen Cup at International Campus, Zhejiang University, demonstrating comprehensive quality with all-round development.

Currently, he has received admission offers from many world-top universities, including Harvard University, Yale University, ETH Zurich, University of California, San Diego, University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, Carnegie Mellon University, and Brown University. He is about to pursue further studies at Harvard University, embarking on a new academic journey.

 

Passion as the Guide · Unity of Knowledge and Action

Choices stem from passion. Since he was first exposed to informatics competitions in high school, he has shown a strong interest in computer knowledge. Through continuous practice, he gradually mastered the basics of programming and identified his future academic direction—Computer Engineering.

Upon entering ZJUI, Wen Jiaheng has always maintained in-depth thinking about professional knowledge. Beyond completing his coursework, he often refines solutions through constant reflection and promotes their application in real-world scenarios. "I remember when I was learning about computer deep learning in my freshman year, I built an image style transfer tool based on convolutional neural networks using the knowledge from the textbook, which could convert photos I took into oil painting styles."

Through such practices, Wen Jiaheng has mastered the learning method of integrating theory with practice. This process not only boosted his learning motivation, but also made professional knowledge vivid and tangible in application, laying a solid foundation for his subsequent in-depth research and study.

Beyond focusing on his own studies, Wen Jiaheng also joined the ZJUI Room78 Algorithm Club, where he explored the mysteries of the computer world together with like-minded classmates. As a core member in club activities, he noticed that many students from non-computer majors who were learning programming faced difficulties in getting started. Leveraging his solid professional foundation, he took the initiative to act as a "guide" and carefully designed and offered an introductory C++ programming course open to the Campus.

Modeled after ZJUI's Python course, the course systematically explained C++ grammar using a comparative teaching method. By contrasting the similarities and differences between the two languages, it helped students gain an in-depth understanding of the essence of programming languages. This interactive teaching model not only lowered the threshold for learning programming, but also helped beginners build a complete cognitive framework for programming thinking, which was well-received by all the students.

Over the four years of university, Wen Jiaheng brought his teaching talents into play, serving successively as a teaching assistant for multiple Sino-foreign cooperative courses at ZJUI, including RHET 101 Principles of Writing, RHET 102 Principles of Research, Introduction to Computer Programming, and Introduction to Algorithms and Computational Models. What filled him with great delight was that, while explaining problems, he gained a deeper understanding of the design patterns and characteristics of computer languages. This two-way flow of knowledge enabled both teaching and learning parties to achieve more than expected gains.

 

Mentors that Illuminate the Path · Classmates that Gather from All Corners of the World

When talking about his academic life, Wen Jiaheng expresses deep gratitude for the guidance and support from the faculty at ZJUI. "My research initiation was inseparable from the careful cultivation of Assistant Professor Wang Gao'ang, my class advisor at ZJUI," Wen recalls. "Since my freshman year,  Assist. Prof. Wang has been creating valuable learning opportunities for undergraduates aspiring to engage in research."

As early as the first semester of his freshman year, Wen Jiaheng began participating in the paper seminars organized by  Assist. Prof.Wang. Through systematically listening to the sharing of cutting-edge research by senior students, he not only broadened his academic horizons but also gradually established a standardized system of research thinking.

In the second semester of his freshman year, under the guidance of  Assist. Prof. Wang Gao'ang, Wen Jiaheng participated in a Zhejiang Provincial College Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training Program project in collaboration with Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine. Entitled "Medical Image Recognition and Data Restoration Technology Based on Object Detection and Generative Adversarial Networks", the project innovatively applied computer vision technology. By integrating object detection and generative adversarial networks, it realized the recognition and restoration of manual markers in medical images, providing more accurate imaging support for clinical diagnosis.

As a member of the project team, Wen Jiaheng systematically completed technical research in related fields and participated in the coding implementation of core algorithms. The project was eventually concluded with an "Excellent" rating, demonstrating his outstanding capabilities in interdisciplinary research. This research experience became a crucial enlightenment in Wen Jiaheng's research journey. "Through participating in this medical imaging project, I systematically mastered the complete research process from literature review to algorithm implementation," he recalled. "The research thinking and engineering capabilities cultivated during this experience not only helped me pass the rigorous interviews for internship positions but also laid a solid foundation for my subsequent professional studies."

Assist. Prof. Wang Gao'ang fully affirmed Wen Jiaheng's performance, stating: "Jiaheng has demonstrated a rigorous academic attitude and full enthusiasm for research in his studies and research endeavors. During his participation in the Student Research Training Program (SRTP), he not only completed various research tasks with high quality but also showed a strong desire for knowledge and a sense of innovation. His outstanding teamwork ability enabled him to interact efficiently with other members of the research team and maintain good communication with his supervisor, fully demonstrating excellent research literacy and development potential. I look forward to his even more remarkable academic achievements on his future research path."

While diving deep into on-campus projects, Wen Jiaheng also actively participated in off-campus practical programs. In 2024, recommended by a senior, he secured an internship offer from Microsoft Research Asia (Internet Engineering Institute) after passing rigorous written tests and two rounds of technical interviews, thanks to his solid professional foundation.

During his internship at Microsoft, Wen Jiaheng was involved in a key project in the field of static analysis. His main task was to verify the correctness of Feature Flags in Windows code through static analysis methods. After in-depth research, he innovatively designed a data structure processing scheme suitable for Windows system code: first converting the code through lexical and syntactic analysis, then applying static analysis methods for verification. Test results showed that this scheme successfully addressed most verification scenarios that could not be handled by the original methods.

This achievement was highly recognized by the US technical team, who explicitly stated that they would consider integrating the scheme into actual systems. The experience proved extremely rewarding for Wen Jiaheng. At Microsoft, he not only met many outstanding mentors and colleagues but also conducted in-depth exchanges with international teams from the United States, India, and other countries. During this period, technical discussions and code reviews became part of his daily routine, continuously enhancing his professional practical abilities and greatly expanding his technical horizons.

In a work environment where diverse cultures converge, Wen Jiaheng stated that he was able to adapt well and actively integrate into it. He attributed this advantage to ZJUI's international education system: "From classroom m discussions to group presentations, ZJUI's English-medium teaching environment has made me handle subsequent overseas exchanges and the Microsoft internship with ease—whether it's daily collaboration in cross-cultural teams or professional presentations in technical meetings, I can cope with confidence."

 At the end of his sharing, Wen Jiaheng offered three practical pieces of advice to his junior schoolmates based on his own experience: First, when choosing an internship position, it is recommended to prioritize research-oriented roles, especially those that value publication of achievements. Such internship experiences can provide significant advantages for subsequent further studies or employment. Second, for students majoring in computer science, he particularly emphasized the importance of integrating theory with practice. He suggested that while studying programming courses, they should engage in supporting exercises on platforms. This not only helps consolidate classroom knowledge but also lays a foundation for future algorithm and technical interviews. Finally, he specifically reminded that the choice of internship position directly affects the quality of the internship. It is advisable to obtain information through professional platforms and consult more experienced seniors to find high-quality internship opportunities that truly suit oneself.

 

Erudition and Steadfast Aspirations · Diverse Interests and Pursuits

Beyond his academic pursuits, Wen Jiaheng also shines on the campus volleyball court. "Volleyball has allowed me to meet friends from all over the world. In every spike and block, we not only hone our skills but also spark cultural exchanges through our interactions," he describes his passion for volleyball. In 2021, he and his teammates courageously claimed the championship of the Freshmen Volleyball Cup atInternational Campus. With his outstanding performance, he was selected for the campus men's volleyball team, continuing to write his youthful story on the sports stage.

Beyond volleyball, Wen Jiaheng is also a passionate enthusiast of coffee culture. He is keen on delving into the art of pour-over coffee, savoring the unique flavors of coffee beans from around the world through the meticulous brewing process. For him, coffee is not just a daily  pick-me-up, but also a cultural bond that connects people. "Participating in coffee tasting events and related clubs has benefited me a lot," Wen Jiaheng shares. "In the 'coffee chats' with seniors, I not only received professional advice but also gained unexpected experience sharing." This coffee-centered way of communication has allowed him to make friends and broaden his horizons and foster academic growth in a relaxed and enjoyable setting.
