On the evening of September 29, the 12th “Sanquan Education” Advanced Award Ceremony of Zhejiang University was held. Assoc Professor Ong Wee-Liat of ZJUI won the title of “Sanquan Education” Advanced Individual of Zhejiang University.
Assoc Professor Ong Wee-Liat joined ZJUI in January 2018. As a foreign faculty member in the Institute, he always stands at the forefront of teaching and research and stays true to the mission of imparting knowledge and nurturing students.
01 Interest-oriented, Creating a Flexible Classroom Experience
Introduction to Computing: Engineering and Science (CS101), which was lectured by Assoc Professor Ong Wee-Liat, is one of the most popular courses at ZJUI. This course provides students with a unique learning experience for strong practicality, interdisciplinary features, profound interest, and outstanding interaction. The students have affirmed his inspiring teaching mode, humorous teaching style, harmonious atmosphere, diligent and responsible working attitude. "Almost everyone can find the joy of typing code under the lively and interesting courses!" his student said. Because of his innovative teaching concept and excellent teaching effect, he won the Second Prize of the Junior Faculty Teaching Competition and other teaching awards, also his lectured courses were recognized as Provincial First-class Undergraduate Courses and Provincial First-class Undergraduate International Courses.
02 Set an Example and Guide Students to Develop in an All-Round way
As a Singaporean, Assoc Professor Ong Wee-Liat was influenced by Chinese traditional concepts since childhood, he insisted on implementing the traditional virtues in personal education, encouraging students to carry out cross-cultural exchanges and make common progress in cooperation. In addition to teaching professional courses, he also leads students to progress in social practice and voluntary dedication, he sets an example to guide students to gradually establish a correct outlook on life, values, and world view. He went to the countryside of China with students, visited Tongwei, Gansu Province to carry out summer social practice, who brought international teaching methods and educational concepts to Tongwei. As a class instructor, he guides and participates in students' class activities from career planning to students' physical and mental health. When postgraduates were faced with the dilemma of urgent research tasks and hematopoietic stem cell donation, he gave students correct guidance and strong support by claiming "It is certainly more important to convey the hope of life than to publish papers". Tu Jing, a 2019 doctoral student in Engineering Thermophysics, shared with us, "Assoc Professor Ong Wee-Liat is an excellent professor with great personality charm. He constantly encouraged me to do real things and accumulate value to society and the country. " Influenced by his words and deeds, Tu Jing decided to go to Mianyang City, Sichuan Province before graduation. He was eager to apply his professional knowledge to that vast land and contribute to the development of western China.
03 Concentrate on Research and Actively Engage in International Cooperation
His research work focuses on the core direction of the national "Dual Carbon Goal" and "Action Plan for Innovation of Energy Technology Revolution", which serves "The Belt and Road" initiative and actively plays the role of international cooperation bond. He presided over the National Natural Science Foundation Outstanding International Young Scientists Project, the "Belt and Road" Provincial and Ministerial International Science and Technology Cooperation Entity, the National Natural Science Foundation's General and Provincial Key Projects. He has published more than 40 academic papers in high-level journals, e.g., Nature Materials, and his review in Advanced Science has been featured on the cover of the journal, and successfully selected as an "ESI Highly Cited Paper".
The “Sanquan Education”Advanced Award is an educational tradition that Zhejiang University has adhered to for more than 20 years.
