Recently, the ZJUI Learning and Research Space (hereinafter referred to as the “Space”) was honored as the “Most Beautiful Learning and Research Space” by Zhejiang University. The design of the Research Space began in 2022, and it was completed and officially named in the summer of 2023. Covering nearly 200 square meters, the space is divided into six function areas: the Scientist Spirit Wall, the Study and Discussion Area, the Achievements Wall, the Reading Corner, the Student Achievement Display Area, and the “Rising Star” Display Wall. The design philosophy, guided by the spirit of Co-ching Chu, is deeply integrated into the layout of the Space, forming a holistic community for service and interaction among faculty members and students based on “cultural education, guidance education, and service education.”
As a flagship outcome of the collaboration between Zhejiang University and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), ZJUI perpetuates the spirit and intellectual legacy of former President Co-ching Chu, while fostering the Institute’s culture of truth-seeking and innovation. The overall design of the Space combines the blue of Zhejiang University as the main color with the orange of UIUC as accents, symbolizing the academic rigor and stability alongside vibrant innovation and optimism. This blend also signifies the strong friendship and promising prospects of the collaboration between Zhejiang University and UIUC. Fusing the colors of Zhejiang University and UIUC into the design of the Space creates a harmonious picture that transcends time and space, crafting an academic atmosphere that balances tradition and modernity, providing a learning and exchange space for ZJUI faculty members and students that is rich in historical legacy and future potential.
Entering the Study and Discussion Area, one is greeted by the Scientist Spirit Wall themed “carry forward the spirit of scientists, extend the boundaries of science and technology,” showcasing important quotes from Co-ching Chu alongside stories of alumni scientists from both Zhejiang University and UIUC. The interactive wall design vividly presents the profound cultural and historical heritage of Zhejiang University and UIUC and encourages ZJUI faculty members and students to take active responsibility in advancing scientific progress and addressing global challenges, contributing to human progress.
The Space integrates the patriotic spirit of “loyalty, perseverance, and responsibility,” the open-minded spirit of “inclusiveness and global vision,” and the scientific spirit of “seeking truth regardless of interests” into its spatial design. Notably, the patriotic spirit and the scientific spirit championed by Co-ching Chu resonate with UIUC’s motto “Learning and Labor” within the Research Space, constantly inspiring students to broaden their horizons and enhance their capabilities in ZJUI’s international environment that blends Eastern and Western cultures. This environment shapes core competencies in pursuing excellence and collaborative innovation, internalizing core values such as commitment, perseverance, justice, and loyalty.
On the roof of the Space, the deep blue ceiling symbolizes the depth and inclusiveness of the ocean, extending infinitely like the vast sea embracing all. The white light strips resemble rivers and streams, coexisting with the ocean on Earth and ultimately merging as one. This design aims to express respect and pursuit of diversity, openness, and expansiveness through symbolic colors and spaces, echoing the inclusive spirit of Zhejiang University“Embrace All like the Ocean,” while also highlighting ZJUI’s open attitude and cultural inclusiveness as a benchmark for Sino-foreign cooperative education. In the Space, the Achievements Wall is presented using a special wall structure resembling a time capsule. This capsule-like Wall endows the space with a unique sense of history and prospects, reflecting the unwavering commitment of ZJUI’s faculty and students to the spirit of “seeking truth.”
Additionally, the Reading Corner is a physical space for ZJUI faculty and students to learn and practice the “spirit of Co-ching Chu.” The design of the Reading Corner’s wall integrates the images of Co-ching Chu and Alma Mater, forming a symmetrical layout on both sides. This emphasizes the significance of these two symbolic figures while balancing the overall visual impact, imbuing the space with a sense of history and academic atmosphere. The Institute regularly organizes book sharing events here, where faculty and students can reflect on Co-ching Chu’s spirit, cultivate their moral character, and enhance cultural confidence through reading and communication.
Furthermore, the design of the Leisure Area in the Space revolves around a “people-oriented” educational philosophy. It is adorned with cultural symbols such as the mottos of Zhejiang University, UIUC, and ZJUI’s mission, vividly showcasing the educational philosophies, academic spirit of both universities, and the unique advantages of ZJUI as a cooperative outcome. This provides a comfortable and inclusive space for communication among ZJUI faculty and students. The Student Achievement Display Area showcases the academic, research, social practice, cultural activities, and international exchange achievements of ZJUI students, perfectly reflecting how they uphold the mottos of both universities and ZJUI’s mission, broadening their perspectives through hands-on practice. The “Rising Star” Display Wall, set against a world map, shows the diverse placement of some graduates. This display underscores ZJUI’s diverse educational achievements and highlights the philosophy of respecting individuality and inclusiveness in student development.
ZJUI consistently integrates the “spirit of Co-ching Chu” into its cultural construction, unifying faculty and students to strive together under the guidance of this inspiring spirit. ZJUI continues to root itself deeply and grow upwards, helping students achieve higher aspirations and demonstrating the commitment to building a community with a shared future for humanity.
