Recently, the editorial board of Engineering Structures, the authoritative journal in the field of civil engineering, announced the selection results for the Best Paper Award of the Year 2023. The Circle team of Zhejiang University-University of Illinois Urbana Champaign Institute (ZJUI), Assist Prof. Cristoforo Demartino of ZJUI, Assist Prof. Yasutaka Narazaki of ZJUI, Prof. Giorgio Monti from the College of Civil Engineering and Architecture, ZJU, Prof. Billie F. Spencer Jr., Adjunct Professor of ZJUI, and Assist Prof. Wang Xuguang of University of Hong Kong, former joint postdoctoral researcher of ZJUI, presented a paper titled Rapid seismic risk assessment of bridges using UAV aerial photometry (published in Volume 279 of 2023), which was awarded the Best Paper Award of the Year 2023.

In 2023, Engineering Structures received 7898 articles and published 1656 papers, with an acceptance rate of only about 20%. After a rigorous review by the editorial board of Engineering Structures in terms of content innovation, research results applicability, and article writing quality, 26 published papers were selected for the Best Paper Award in different fields (10 in the Asia/Pacific region, 9 in the Europe region, and 7 in the America/Africa region), distributed in ten directions including bridge engineering, earthquake engineering, and concrete structures.

The CIRCLE (Center for Infrastructure Resilience in Cities as Livable Environments) is one of three joint research centers established by the Grainger College of Engineering, UIUC and Zhejiang University, focusing on resilient urban infrastructure construction to make urban development more sustainable and living environments more livable. The awarding of the paper reflects the innovative ability and academic level of ZJUI’s Civil Engineering discipline in basic and applied scientific research, laying a solid foundation for future technological breakthroughs and cross-disciplinary integrated innovation in the field of civil engineering.
