ZJUI is a jointly operated engineering college on the Zhejiang University (ZJU) International Campus in Haining, China, about 120km southwest of Shanghai. By introducing top engineering curricula and resources from ZJU, ZJUI provides a world-class engineering education. The ZJU-UIUC Institute conducts teaching and multidisciplinary research in broad program themes of Engineering Sciences for Computing and Data Science, Intelligent Systems and Materials, Advanced Electronics and Electrical Engineering, and beyond. The Institute offers programs in computer engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, mechanical engineering, and civil & environmental engineering. Classes and student activities are conducted in English. Successful candidates will initiate and lead collaborative research and perform academic and professional service duties associated with the ZJU-UIUC Institute. They will be leaders for teaching and research innovation, giving students a meaningful and interactive engineering education.

 

Applicants are welcome and encouraged from relevant science and engineering disciplines, computer science, mathematics, and physics. The institute has interests that address but are not limited to interdisciplinary topics exemplified by Artificial Intelligence, Computer Graphics, Embodied Intelligence, Human-Computer Interaction, Visual Analytics, Computer Vision, Data Mining, Computing Systems Hardware and Software, Networking and Distributed Computing, Theory and algorithms; Power Systems and Integrated Energy, Power Electronics, Circuits, Electromagnetics, Optics and Remote Sensing, Microelectronics and Photonics, Nanotechnology, and Artificial Intelligence and Applications in Electrical and Electronic Engineering; Advanced Manufacturing, Solid Mechanics and Materials Design, Robotics, Control, Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning for Mechanical Engineering Applications; Intelligent transportation, low-altitude economy, AI+ transportation and candidates who have exceptional academic record or demonstrate strong potential in the cutting-edge research areas of engineering and science multidisciplinary technologies with Science and Engineering background.

 

 Program Overview

The Science Fund Program for Distinguished Young Scholars (Overseas) of the National Natural Science Foundation of China seeks to attract and support outstanding young scholars from abroad (including non-Chinese foreign nationals) who have already made notable achievements in the natural sciences and engineering. The program invites them to return or come to China, where they are encouraged to independently pursue innovative research in their chosen directions.

 

 Applicant Qualifications

A. Eligibility Criteria

1.Adhere to the laws and regulations of China, demonstrate good scientific ethics, and consciously embody the spirit of scientists in the new era.

2.Born after January 1, 1986 (inclusive).

3.Hold a doctoral degree.

4.Conduct research primarily in the natural sciences, engineering, or related fields.

5.Between receiving their doctoral degree and June 15, 2026, must have held a formal teaching or research position at a renowned overseas university, research institution, or corporate R&D facility for a cumulative period of 36 months or more. For candidates who obtained their doctoral degree overseas and have demonstrated exceptional performance (excluding those who earned their degree through joint Sino-foreign programs), a waiver of the length-of-experience requirement may be considered.
Any period of employment with a salaried position within China while also holding an overseas position will not count toward the required overseas work experience.

6.Have achieved research or technological outcomes recognized by peers and demonstrate the potential to become an academic leader or outstanding talent in their field;

7.Must not have returned to China (or come to China) for work, or must have returned to China (or come to China) on or after January 1, 2025. Upon notification of funding, candidates must resign from any overseas positions and commit to working full-time in China for no less than three years.

B. Other Restrictions
Applicants must comply with the relevant coordination requirements for national science and technology talent programs. Concurrent appointments to similar national-level talent programs are not permitted. An individual may only apply for one program in a given year, and applications for a lower level are not allowed if the applicant already holds a higher-level appointment under these programs.
