The Zhejiang University/University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Institute (ZJU-UIUC Institute) in Haining, China is seeking to hire a limited number of full-time, non-tenured faculty positions to teach first-year composition classes starting Fall 2024.
All candidates are required to have a doctorate (preferred) or master’s degree in English or other relevant field, plus teaching experience at the college level. Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate excellence and leadership in teaching writing at the college level.
The ZJU-UIUC Institute is an engineering college on the Zhejiang University (ZJU) International Campus in Haining, China, about 120 km southwest of Shanghai. The ZJU-UIUC Institute conducts teaching and research in broad program themes of engineering sciences for human health, engineering sciences for flexible manufacturing, and engineering sciences at the nexus of energy, environment, and sustainable development. Undergraduate and graduate degrees are offered in civil engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering. Classes and student activities are conducted in English. Students are enrolled to earn dual degrees from ZJU and from UIUC. Many of the Institute’s research activities have important humanities aspects, including understanding of social and economic impact, consideration of human interactions, impact on education, and public outreach.
Responsibilities for faculty members in the English program include teaching three classes per semester of first-year composition and contributing to service and extracurricular activities on campus. English faculty members report to the Director of Rhetoric from the University of Illinois as well as the Dean of the ZJU-UIUC Institute.
Applications must include an application letter, a complete CV, a philosophy of teaching statement, two sample syllabi from prior teaching experiences (each no more than five pages in length that stress assignments, texts, grading policies, and schedules), and names and contact information of three professional references. Strong candidates will articulate teaching philosophies and practices grounded in currently accepted disciplinary best practices; provide detailed examples to demonstrate conscientious, student-centered teaching methods; and provide specific examples of how they emphasize equity, access and inclusion in their classrooms by supporting diverse student populations.
