The Zhejiang University Concrete Dragon Boat Competition, founded by the Zhejiang University–University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Institute (ZJUI), is one of ZJUI’s flagship academic and cultural events. Blending the spirit of traditional Chinese dragon boat culture with modern engineering principles, it delivers a uniquely valuable hands-on learning experience for students.

Through designing and building concrete dragon boats, students not only develop a deeper appreciation for Chinese cultural heritage, but also hone their skills in research and innovation, integrated design, and practical engineering. This perfect fusion of academic rigor, cultural depth, creativity, teamwork, and fun epitomizes ZJUI’s distinctive approach to engineering education.

Schedule

By May 5: Registration via the Zhejiang University Undergraduate Research Training and Discipline Competition Management System.

Registration steps: Navigate to the "Discipline Competition System" tab → Click "Competition Registration" → Select "Zhejiang University Concrete Dragon Boat Competition"

May 6: Eligibility review for all registered teams.

Mid-May: Pre-competition training sessions (including laboratory safety training) will be held, which will be announced separately.

May to June: Boat model fabrication with materials prepared by teams.

By June 11: Teams shall email their technical paper, project poster, team photo, and other required materials to the mailbox (concretedragon@zju.edu.cn). The email subject line and all attachment filenames shall follow the format: Team Name + Boat Name.

June 13: Teams shall submit four concrete test specimens together with its remote-controlled concrete dragon boat model. The competition will include hull inspection, material strength testing, a straight-line sprint, and an obstacle-course race, which will be held at the International Campus, Zhejiang University.

Late June: Top-performing teams will be selected to represent Zhejiang University at the 8th International College Student Concrete Dragon Boat Competition at Guangxi University.

Eligibility

The competition is open to all full-time undergraduates at Zhejiang University who are enrolled as of June 30, 2026. Each team must have 3 to 5 students, and each student may join only one team.
