Harvesting the Gold Medal of Youth at a Faster Pace

Climbing academic peaks requires strong physical fitness, and appropriate physical exercise can balance study and life. For Wang Benlu, sports are not only a lubricant for his studies but also a spiritual nourishment and an indispensable part of his life.

In terms of sports, Wang Benlu set a strict training plan for himself, including daily morning runs and regular speed & strength training. This not only made his physical education grades during his undergraduate years outstanding but also made him a prominent figure on the sports field. During his undergraduate years, Wang Benlu actively participated in sports meetings. In the first campus sports meeting, he won four gold medals in short-distance men’s individual athletics and team relay events. And he achieved excellent results in the men’s 100 meters, men’s 200 meters, and men’s 4x100 meters relay events in three consecutive sports meetings in Zhejiang University. Over the four years, he accumulated 3 gold medals, 1 silver medal, 2 bronze medals, and several fourth-place finishes in both individual and team events.

Not only that, during his exchange period at UIUC, Wang Benlu’s passion for sports remained undiminished. With his outstanding physical fitness, he joined the UIUC track and field club. Besides his high-intensity professional coursework during the day, he persisted in attending professional track and field training from 10 PM to midnight for two consecutive semesters. Additionally, he volunteered for UIUC football games and track and field test events in his spare time. He said, “Although balancing study and sports training often made me feel pressured and exhausted, I never thought of giving up. Instead, I became more resilient. In my past life and studies, I have always benefited from the perseverance that sports training has given me. No matter where I go, I will maintain my love for sports and my commitment to pursuing excellence.” For Wang Benlu, each day of sweating is not only marked by the glistening sweat but also by the brilliance of growth and transformation. His agile figure on the track not only achieved excellent results but also accelerated his life. Each medal is a symbol of effort and struggle, witnessing his brilliant youth.

Exploring a Bright Future with Stronger Abilities

Wang Benlu’s excellent personal abilities and outstanding comprehensive qualities were not innate nor achieved overnight but were honed and developed over time. In addition to his learning abilities, Wang Benlu actively participated in various volunteer services and social practices, developing his comprehensive qualities in all aspects, especially team leadership and organizational coordination abilities. During his freshman and sophomore years, he served as a member of the Sports Department of the Student Union at the International Campus, assisting in organizing multiple large-scale sports events, accumulating over 100 hours of volunteer service, and making positive contributions to the development of campus sports culture. In the first semester of his senior year, he also proactively took on important tasks such as organizing, registering, selecting, and recruiting volunteers for ZJUI athletes for the first International Campus Sports Meeting, actively mobilizing fellow students to participate, formulating and recording selection criteria for ZJUI participants, making significant contributions to ZJUI’s excellent performance in the first International Campus Sports Meeting.

His leadership and organization skills were also evident in social practice activities. During the summer vacation of his sophomore year, Wang Benlu, as the team leader, organized students from the International Campus to his hometown in Shandong Province for a summer social practice themed “Inheriting Red Genes, Drawing Strength to Forge Ahead.” He led the team members to visit revolutionary sites, conduct voluntary teaching research, and hold alumni meetings. He led the team back to his middle school, Jinan Yuying Middle School, for a presentation. He deeply felt that this was not only a deep connection between Zhejiang University students and Yuying Middle School students but also his first attempt to give back to his alma mater as a university student. During this process, Wang Benlu further clarified the responsibilities of contemporary youth. “When I saw the eager faces thirsting for knowledge, I couldn't help but recall my own years of hard work. At the same time, I realized that university is not the end, and life still requires continuous effort.”

Advice for ZJUIers:

1.Be Brave to Make Mistakes and Explore More Possibilities. Many students feel uncertain about whether to apply for postgraduate studies abroad or not. Regardless of the path, do not miss opportunities due to hesitation. Students should establish their plans for future postgraduate studies as early as possible, and boldly move forward in one direction.

2.Make Clever Use of Educational Resources. Compared to other domestic institutions, ZJUI provides undergraduates with abundant and high-quality research platforms and resources. It is recommended that students take advantage of these, proactively engage in research attempts to deepen their understanding of professional knowledge, expand their academic horizons, and enrich their personal resumes.

Born with Strength,

Fight with All Effort,

Strive with Full Commitment,

Accelerate the Pace of Life.

Let’s cheer for ZJUIers together!
