Lab Director & Associate Professor
Expertise: Electromagnetic theory, scattering modeling
Dr. Shurun Tan is the Director of the Electromagnetic Scattering Laboratory (EMSL) and an Associate Professor at ZJU-UIUC Institute, the International Campus of Zhejiang University, China. He received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, US, in 2017. His research focuses on computational electromagnetics, wave-matter interactions, and microwave remote sensing.
Dr. Tan has published over 60 peer-reviewed journal papers, over 190 conference papers and abstracts, and serves on the editorial boards of the journal PIER. He leads the development of the community tool RSHub. He is a recipient of the PIERS Young Scientist Award.
Ms Yuting Jin joined EMSL in 2019 and serves as the Administrative Assistant for the laboratory. She holds a Bachelor's degree in English from Shanghai University of Finance and Economics.
Yuting is responsible for managing the lab's daily operations, coordinating research activities, organizing seminars and conferences, and assisting with grant proposals. Her excellent organizational skills and attention to detail have contributed significantly to the lab's smooth operation.
Yuting loves knowing different people. Personally, wandering in various kinds of museums is always a great pleasure. Also, exploring fancy places would be wonderful choices. A warm team she is in!
Postdoc Research Fellow
Expertise: Snow Remote Sensing, Large Language Model, data assimilation
Dr. Yiwen Fang joined EMSL as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in 2023. She received her Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles, LA, USA, in 2023. Her research focuses on remote sensing modeling, data assimilation, land surface modeling, and spatial-temporal analysis of terrestrial snow and other natural elements of the water cycle, with particular interest in data assimilation techniques and the application of large language models in earth observation.
Dr. Fang has developed novel snow products from satellite observations and has participated in several field campaigns. She is currently working on integrating AI techniques with physical models for improved remote sensing data interpretation. She coordinates the team for the RSHub development.
Senior Research Assistant
Focusing on AI empowered microwave remote sensing and acceleration of microwave scattering models.
Mr Yuanhao Cao received his Master degree in Geography from the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, in 2023 and then joined EMSL. His research focuses on AI-based parameters retrieval from microwave data, SAR image processing, physical modeling for snow cover dynamics, physics-informed machine learning, and high performance computing. He is among the primary contributors to the Altay 2025 wet snow campaign.
Senior Research Assistant
Focusing on cryosphere microwave remote sensing and AI for science in computing.
Ms Jiayi Du received her Master’s degree in Geography from the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, in 2023 and then joined EMSL. Her research focuses on cryosphere microwave remote sensing, specializing in physical snow modeling for snow cover dynamics, physics-informed machine learning for electromagnetic computation and snow parameter retrieval. She is among the primary contributors to the Altay 2025 wet snow campaign.
Syed Imran Haider joined EMSL as a Ph.D. candidate in 2021, working on electromagnetic information theory and techniques for advanced communication and sensing applications. He is also interested in electromagnetic interference in millimeter wave automotive radar systems and ice sheet remote sensing. Imran was awarded the Best Student Paper Award at ACES-China 2025 for his seminal work on electromagnetic information analysis of joined communication and sensing systems in dynamic environments.
Syed Imran Haider received his Bachelor's degree in Electronic Engineering from Mohammad Ali Jinnah University, Islamabad Campus, Pakistan in 2008. His Final Year Project was Remote Home Automation using 2G Mobile phone. He joined the same university as Lab Engineer in 2008. There, his job was to conduct the laboratory demonstrations of signals and systems, communications systems and microcontroller interfacing. He was the founding member and also Vice-Chair of IEEE student chapter. He completed his M.S degree in Electronic Engineering in year 2013. He is experienced in designing of Industrial automation systems and he also started focusing on EMC of industrial systems at the design level.
Imran Haider likes to visit beautiful places and also play sports for fitness. He likes to practice religion and keep the faith on Allah Almighty. He thinks that humanity and love make a universal language which every living organism can understand and respect.
PhD Candidate
Working on electromagnetic scattering theory, computational electromagnetics, and AI for science in microwave remote sensing.
Mr Kaiqi Chen is a Ph.D. candidate at EMSL, specializing in electromagnetic scattering theory and microwave remote sensing of vegetated land surfaces. He is also interested in computational graphics and applying AI techniques in electromagnetic modeling and data analysis. Kaiqi has developed comprehensive microwave emission and scattering theory from forested land and his work has been published in leading journals in microwave remote sensing.
Kaiqi received his Bachelor's degree in Electronic Engineering from Ningbo University in 2021. During his undergraduate years, he won a national scholarship and actively participated in many competitions, such as electronic design competition, mathematical modeling competition, etc.
Kaiqi enjoys reading various kinds of books, playing board games with friends and cycling. Besides, he is keen to try new things and broaden his fields of interest.
PhD Candidate
Expertise: rough surface scattering modeling and measurements with applications in soil remote sensing, metasurface and freqeuncy selective surface design and modeling.
ShaoJie Xu joined EMSL in 2023 after he received his master degree in electronic information from China Jiliang University. Since his master's program, he began his research in electromagnetics and participated in several collaborative projects with industry. He continued this work on electromagnetic theory throughout his doctoral studies. His research now primarily focuses on surface scattering problems, such as scattering from random rough surfaces and metamaterials. Shaojie enjoys listening to rock music and watching live show.
Master Candidate
Developing microwave scattering models for vegetated land surfaces and millimeter wave automotive radar optimization.
Mr. Tengfeng Zhang is a Master candidate at EMSL, working on microwave scattering models for vegetated land surfaces. He is also interested in millimeter-wave radar signal processing, and antenna array optimization design. Tengfeng received his Bachelor's degree in Communication Engineering from Shandong University in 2023.
Tengfeng has participated and contributed to a microwave remote sensing campaign in Hainan, China for rainforest remote sensing. Tengfeng enjoys playing badminton and playing Chinese chess. He also loves travelling with friends and being close to nature.
Master Candidate
Working on scatterometer design, modeling, and microwave measurement techniques for environmental monitoring.
Ms Zhijiao Cao received her Bachelor’s degree in Electronic Information Engineering from Central South University in 2023. After graduation, she worked as a Software Engineer at BYD for one year. She then joined EMSL as a Master Candidate in 2024. Her research interests include remote sensing modeling, scatterometer system design, and microwave measurement techniques for environmental monitoring. Zhijiao is the primary contributor to our on-campus microwave environmental monitoring system.
Hello everyone, my name is Weibo Yuan. In 2025, I graduate from Sun Yat-sen University, majoring in electronic information science and technology.
During my undergraduate years, I was particularly enthusiastic about participating in various competitions and scientific research activities. My team and I worked together to win the Honorable Mention award in the American College Student Mathematical Modeling Competition. I was also involved in the development of a patent as a third inventor, which was eventually successfully granted. On the road of scientific research, I also received careful guidance and help from my mentors and seniors, and successfully completed the publication of my EI paper.
In terms of student work, I serve as the secretary of the class league committee. I actively organized class activities and led everyone to make progress together, and finally our class was awarded the title of school-level outstanding league branch, and I personally won the title of 2024 school-level outstanding league cadre because of my outstanding work performance. In addition, I have also exercised myself in the position of student assistant, assisting counselors in handling various affairs and contributing to the college as much as I can.
In life, I am a full of energy. I like to travel with my friends, appreciate the great rivers and mountains of the motherland together, and feel the customs of different places. I also love sports, and I don't refuse to come to all kinds of ball games, especially basketball, football and badminton. In my spare time, I also listen to music, which can relieve stress and relax.

I’m a thoughtful person—quiet by nature and very attentive to details. I find joy in simple pleasures like taking long walks and so on. I'm also keen to experiment and try new things.
Haobo Kang graduated from China University of Mining and Technology with a bachelor's degree in Optoelectronic Information Science and Engineering in 2025. He dedicated himself to the students' union and published one SCI paper as the first author during this time. Haobo is passionate about calculation and simulation, and he enjoy tennis and movies in spare time.
Rongruo Shang graduated from China Agricultural University, majoring in Electronic Information Engineering. During her undergraduate studies, she actively participated in various professional competitions and received several awards. She is currently interested in the field of artificial intelligence, focusing on its applications in intelligent systems.
She enjoys cycling in her spare time. One of her most memorable experiences was completing a long-distance ride from Harbin to Heihe during the summer after her undergraduate graduation.
Jiahui Li graduated from Nanjing Normal University, majoring in Electronic Information. During his undergraduate years, he participated in various academic and art competitions such as the National Physics Experiment Competition, and won scholarships including the University Merit Student Scholarship.
In his spare time, he enjoys tinkering with DIY projects and repairing electrical appliances. He also loves exploring interesting places in unfamiliar cities.

AI-driven intelligent microwave data analysis
Now Lab Manager for the DEM lab at UIUC
Heston Blackwell recently graduated from the ZJUI Institute and is now working as the lab manager for the DEM lab at UIUC. During her undergrad, she worked closely with EMSL for her Senior Thesis and has continued to engage in research with the lab focusing on the role of assistive AI in microwave remote sensing data analysis and interpretation through physical scattering models.
Jiaming Lin is a junior undergraduate at ZJUI majored in electrical and computer engineering. His interest lies in the algorithms and applications of artificial intelligence. He has conducted research on AI image generation and LLM-driven role playing chatbot. He also participated in building web agents for RAG retrieval and pattern matching tool calling. He has contributed to developing an LLM-driven chatbot interface for our RSHub platform.
