How we can use big computers and big data in aerospace industry?
Nowadays, the aerospace industry is highly dependent on powerful computers. Numerical calculations are used throughout the whole designing process, from designing an individual component to setting up the layout of the entire engine. In this talk, I will present the basics of how a jet engine works and how to design the aero-path within a jet engine.
Designing an efficient and reliable jet engine is highly challenging. Different fidelity levels of simulations are used in the design process. At the later stage of a design, powerful computers are deployed to validate the initial design. In this talk, some of high fidelity simulations will be presented to show how the aerospace industry is using the big computers.
Apart from validating the initial design, the high-fidelity simulation also generates a significant amount of data. The second part of the talk will briefly introduce the idea of how to use the data generated by the high-fidelity simulations for turbulence modellings.
Dr. Jiahuan Cui is an assistant professor at ZJU-UIUC institute working within Mechanical Engineering division at Zhejiang University. Dr. Cui received his Ph.D from the University of Cambridge in 2016 and his undergraduate degree from Xi'an Jiaotong University in 2012. He also visited the University of California, Los Angeles in 2012 for 6 months. Prior to joining the ZJUI institute, he worked at the University of Cambridge as a research associate on an aero-engine project sponsored by Rolls Royce and Innovate UK. His primary research interests are: large eddy simulation for turbines; low order fan/compressor modelling; turbulence modelling; fundamental fluid mechanics and turbulence study; measurement techniques; fan and intake design.
